Ryan Backer is an age activist, the co-creator of the Old School Anti-Ageism Clearinghouse, and an “old person in training.” They have spoken about and facilitated workshops on age, aging, and undoing ageism internationally. They've worked as an in-home care partner, as well as interned at the Edie Windsor SAGE Center, the NYC Elder Abuse Center, and Brooklyn Pride Center's ElderPRIDE. From 2021 to 2022 Ryan was a fellow with Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research’s Antibigotry Convening. Ryan does care work, organizes interage events and groups, writes zines, and sits on the board of two community-based nonprofits in Tio'tia:ke, (Joh-jaw-gay) colonially known as Montreal, Quebec. They have an undergraduate degree in Gerontology with a minor in Black Studies from York College, City University of New York. They identify as a white, non-binary settler and have been doing this work since 2013.
